Keeping your oven clean and well-maintained is important for both its performance and longevity. While regular professional oven cleaning is necessary to keep your oven in top shape, there are steps you can take to maintain it between cleanings. Here are some tips on how to maintain your oven between cleanings.

Wipe up spills immediately

The most important step you can take to maintain your oven between cleanings is to wipe up spills as soon as they happen. This is especially important for acidic or sugary spills, which can damage the interior of the oven if left uncleaned. Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe up spills as soon as they happen, being careful not to burn yourself on the hot surface.

Use drip pans

Drip pans are a great way to catch spills and prevent them from sticking to the bottom of your oven. Place a drip pan under anything you're cooking that's likely to spill or drip, such as a roast or a pie. You can also purchase disposable drip pans that are specifically designed for your oven model.

Clean the oven racks

Even if you're not cleaning your oven itself, it's a good idea to clean the oven racks periodically. Remove them from the oven and soak them in hot, soapy water for an hour or two. Then, use a scrub brush or sponge to remove any remaining grime or debris. Rinse the racks thoroughly and dry them before putting them back in the oven.

Use a self-cleaning function

Many modern ovens come with a self-cleaning function that heats the oven to a high temperature to burn off any residue or grime. If your oven has this function, use it periodically to keep the interior clean. Be aware that self-cleaning can produce a lot of smoke and can sometimes cause the oven to emit an unpleasant odor, so be sure to open a window or turn on a fan while it's running.

Avoid using harsh chemicals

While it can be tempting to use harsh cleaning chemicals to get rid of tough stains or grime, these can actually damage the interior of your oven. Instead, use a mild detergent and warm water to clean the interior of the oven. If you need something stronger, try baking soda or vinegar, which are natural cleaning agents that won't harm your oven.

Check the oven seal

The oven seal is the gasket that runs around the edge of the oven door. It's important to make sure that this seal is intact and free of cracks or tears, as a damaged seal can cause heat to escape from the oven and reduce its efficiency. Check the seal periodically and replace it if necessary.

By following these tips, you can maintain your oven between cleanings and ensure that it stays clean and functioning properly for years to come. Remember, regular professional oven cleaning is still necessary to remove stubborn grime and ensure that your oven is truly clean, so be sure to schedule cleanings with a reputable oven cleaner as needed.
